REVIEW
- Monroe, Matthew? Everything Shakespeare.
- Visited: 6 Sept. 2003
Contents: A 730-word summary, four amateurish essays, and the text of the play.
This site has summaries and texts for all of Shakespeare's works, but it has no proper home page, and I think that Matthew Monroe is the author only because the directory of the summaries attributes them to him.
For Macbeth:
The text begins at this page:
<http://www.field-of-themes.com/shakespeare/comtext/tragedies/macbeth.htm>. There are no notes or search engine, just the text.
The very short (730-word) summary of the plot is here:
Such a short summary might be helpful for quick review, but there are errors in it, such as "Macbeth accidentally admits of the murder, then recants," and "Macbeth vows to fight them [Malcolm and Macduff] at Fife."
The first essay (2050 words), "MacBeth Trajedy [sic.]or Satire?" is here:
<http://www.field-of-themes.com/shakespeare/essays/Emacbeth1.htm>. It asks this question: "If Macbeth is acting on the impulses stimulated by the prophecies of
his fate, is this Shakespearean work of art really a Tragedy?"
The second essay (1200 words), "MacBeth Attitude Changes," is here:
<http://www.field-of-themes.com/shakespeare/essays/Emacbeth2.htm>. Its thesis is: "Because of his change of character from good to evil, Macbeth's
attitude towards other characters, specifically Duncan, Banquo, Lady
Macbeth, and the witches, is significantly affected."
The third essay (480 words), "MacBeth Tragic Hero," is here:
<http://www.field-of-themes.com/shakespeare/essays/Emacbeth3.htm>. Its main point is: "The three
points which contribute greatly to Macbeth's degeneration are the
prophecy which was told to him by the witches, how Lady Macbeth
influenced and manipulated Macbeth's judgment, and finally Macbeth's
long time ambition which drove his desire to be king."
The fourth essay (472 words), "Darkness, Sign of Chaos in Macbeth," is here:
<http://www.field-of-themes.com/shakespeare/essays/Emacbeth4.htm>. Its main point is: "The witches,
Macbeth, and Scotland are all described as dark because they represent
the agents of chaos."
Bottom Line: One of the essays might inspire you to write your own, better essay.
