Menteith is among the Scottish forces that are marching to join Malcolm and the English army in Birnam wood before Macbeth's castle. He opens the scene by saying, "The English power is near, led on by Malcolm, / His uncle Siward and the good Macduff: / Revenges burn in them; for their dear causes / Would to the bleeding and the grim alarm / Excite the mortified man" (5.2.1-5). [Scene Summary] When the Scottish forces have joined the English army at Birnam wood, Malcolm says, "Cousins, I hope the days are near at hand / That chambers will be safe," and Mentieth replies, "We doubt it nothing" (5.4.1-2). Malcolm is referring to the murder of King Duncan in his bedchamber, and they are both expressing confidence that their side will win. [Scene Summary] Although he is not named in the stage directions, Mentieth is probably among the thanes who are present at the end of the play, and who honor the victorious Malcolm by shouting "Hail, King of Scotland!"
