fancy The word meant both "imagination" and "love"; Duke Orsino is using it in both senses, hence my gloss, "love-longing." Also, when used to mean "love," "fancy" suggested then—as it does now—an emotion that could be whimsical and uncertain, as in the phrase "a passing fancy."
